The Senior Staff Multimedia Software Engineer will be a core member of Customer Engineering Services (CE Services), a team of engineers and project managers focused on helping Dolby customers design, build, and test the end-to-end integration of Dolby technology into their products and services. The CE Services team works side-by-side with customers around the world to integrate existing Dolby products into customer offerings. With an initial focus to launch online (over-the-top) services for delivery of rich-media content with multi-channel audio to consumers, primary CE Services customer engagements include online service providers, professional encoder manufacturers, device manufacturers, and associated IC suppliers.

Responsibilities:

Core responsibilities of the Multimedia Software Engineer are to provide systems integration and product development expertise to Dolby licensed device manufactures and application vendors, to properly implement Dolby technologies in consumer electronics devices and associated playback applications for error-free carriage of Dolby formats over online and mobile delivery services.

The position requires a deep technical understanding of embedded systems design for playback of rich media content in consumer electronics devices through online and mobile services. The position will facilitate the deployment of Dolby’s technologies in today’s most advanced DSP architectures and operating systems ensuring that the audio performance and functionality meet Dolby standards. The successful applicant will bring proven experience in digital audio processing and embedded system development to Dolby’s technology programs. This engineering role requires technical proficiency and careful analysis of complex technical and policy matters. The Multimedia Software Engineer will:
- Act as a customer-facing technical expert in Dolby’s audio DSP technologies and their integration into operating system media frameworks.
- Work closely with Dolby’s most strategic consumer electronics hardware and software partners to help them achieve success with our technologies by providing project engineering services for system integration and product development with a focus on Mobile devices, PCs, and other devices for consumer E-Media markets.
- Meet with Dolby playback customers and partners in established and emerging markets to define and/or verify customer requirements for end-to-end integration of Dolby offerings into their products.
- Ensure Dolby audio playback requirements are met within third-party consumer electronics devices through direct product design and integration support; integrate Dolby technology into client applications and consumer electronics devices.
- Provide technical expertise concerning audio playback behavior and requirements, streaming media systems, and security of Dolby’s intellectual property.
- Help resolve issues by conveying Dolby technologies through consumer electronics devices and media playback application recommendations and direct involvement with associated product manufacturers.
- Prototype and qualify audio workflows prior to deployment. Ensure that consumer electronics devices and media playback applications selected provide reliable and error-free playback of Dolby-enabled content.
- Interface with Dolby product evaluation technicians to prioritize acoustical tuning and testing of implementations, operating system integrations, and consumer electronics devices to assess and ensure compliance with Dolby audio standards.
- Interface with other parties to implement the architectural design, such as other product partners, DRM vendors, media framework and playback companies, and IC vendors.
- Provide feedback to Product Marketing, Product Management, Product Engineering, and Technical Support regarding system and product improvements and new product designs, and their priorities. Provide feedback based on customer input, industry experience, and internal objectives.
- Ensure relevant information on “what works and what doesn’t” learned during projects is captured in Dolby’s Knowledgebase, for reuse in subsequent projects and to assist sales and support efforts.
- Generate work scope(s) to implement the playback architectural design(s).
- Work with CE Project Management to create project plans based on the work scope and successfully execute the applications engineering portion of the project plans.
- Work with Dolby Professional Support and Engineering teams, Interoperability Labs, and Knowledge Infrastructure to complete applications engineering design, build, and test elements of customer projects, and to support existing Dolby technical support programs with subject-matter expertise when needed.
- Applications engineering project execution is expected to include some combination of the following:
- Be the voice of the customer:
- Work closely with other engineering teams to correct product issues and communicate new product and new feature opportunities and requirements.
- Complete assignments independently, interpret generally defined practices, policies and methods, and apply deep knowledge and intimate understanding of customer needs.
- Reflect Dolby’s commitment to the highest quality products and service in all internal and external customer support activities.
- Responsibilities are carried out largely on-site at customer locations as well as via email, telephone, and group-to-group meetings.

Qualifications:
- M.S. or B.S. in Engineering, or equivalent related experience and 7+ years of experience in engineering, computer science, consumer audio or related fields.
- Proven track record of high-quality work in both academic environments and in the working world. Ability to work independently and with cross-functional teams to achieve goals established in a team environment. Very strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities when working with complex problems, typically involving knowledge from multiple sub-disciplines within the audio and communications fields.
- Technical experience in multimedia technologies and integrating software applications into media frameworks and related embedded operating systems. DSP experience must include at least two of the following areas: DSP algorithm porting, optimization and integration; Embedded Systems design; Software for embedded processors; Computer and Operating system architecture; IP-based content delivery; DRM systems; IP playback products; Test and Measurement.
- Experience with C/C++ and/or Assembly programming.
- Experience with mobile and PC product development in any of the following capacities: Carrier/OEM testing and validation; Acoustics calibration, tuning, testing and validation; Operating system integration; Audio system design and testing; Audio codec development and integration; Prototype bring-up and debugging.
- Working knowledge of Windows, Android, and Linux operating system development and media frameworks.
- Exposure to streaming media stacks and open API’s; DSP library configuration for audio products.
- Experience with ARM toolchain; gcc; Visual Studio and/or X-code build environments.
- Excellent written and verbal English communications skills and ability to work with both internal and external customers with a very wide range of knowledge and skill levels. Ability to adapt one’s communication approach in an astute manner, working internationally, with international customers, or interacting with executives, technicians, or experienced engineers.
- Impeccable integrity and the ability to handle situations involving complicated, high-pressure legal or business relationships, as well as sensitive, confidential information.
- Multiple language ability preferred.
