Overview:

This is a senior role within E-Media Engineering team to successfully bring the next generation of Dolby’s audio and video products and licensed technologies to market on time, on budget and with the needed business value.

This primary function of the Senior Engineering Project Manager is to provide project management support for multiple, complex, cross-site product hardware and/or software development efforts. The Project Manager will join the Core Team, consisting of Product (or Platform) Management, Program Management, and Engineering and will be responsible to initiate and facilitate the planning and tracking of product development efforts based on defined product requirements through product release.

The Project Manager partners with the Engineering Leads who have primary responsibility for all development deliverables and works closely with Program Managers who facilitate and coordinate the cross-functional activities between engineering, marketing, sales, etc. The Project Manager produces regular program status updates to Engineering Management and works with Engineering Management to define and implement project management and development best practices and to train and mentor others in applying them.

Responsibilities:

Project Planning

Play a lead role in planning engineering development effort based on product requirements through product release.
- Drive creation of development plans, project schedules, work and cost estimates for assigned projects in line with Dolby’s Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) process.
- Work with Engineering Leads to create the engineering development plan based on product requirements, development priorities and resource availability.
- Drive creation of development schedules using the scheduling tool by applying established best practices. Work collaboratively with the development team to establish major milestones, identify and assign tasks, and estimate work.
- Proactively anticipate problems and build risk mitigation plans accordingly.
- Lead the development team to agreement on project commit date.
- Work collaboratively with Marketing to manage changes in product and/or customer requirements. Understand change requests and assess impact on schedule with minimal disruption of ongoing development activity.

Project Tracking

Manage tracking of projects against development plans and resolving issues as they arise.
- Facilitate global, cross-site engineering project meetings and track issues and action items.
- Maintain up-to-date information on development milestones and status using the project collaboration tool.
- Track development status on a regular basis and provide feedback to the development team on progress. Proactively raise scheduling issues to the development team and work with the Engineering Lead to resolve.
- Provide development status and raise any issues that impact external commitments to the program team and appropriate stakeholders.
- Keep engineering management abreast on project progress, roadblocks, cost implications and project risk.
- After development has completed, assess team’s performance against the baseline schedule and identify areas for improving quality and accuracy of schedules. Work with engineering management to implement process improvements.

Project Management Leadership

Provide guidance and expertise to engineers with project management duties and stay current with company and industry best practices.
- Actively engage with all engineering development sites to understand global project management needs and operating procedures.
- Mentor and assist other Project Managers and Engineering Leads on applying project management best practices.
- Attend schedule reviews for other projects and provide feedback and assistance.
- Attend approved seminars, conferences and short courses to increase knowledge and expertise.
- Recommend changes to the Project Manager role to keep aligned with evolving organizational and operational needs.

Process Improvement

Improve project management and development capabilities across engineering organization.
- Keep up to date on "best practices" of peers in same or other groups and work to continuously improve both project management and development processes based on management approved approaches.
- Develop tools and techniques as needed to succeed in role and train others on tools.
- Provide feedback to the program management group on improving the PLM process.
- With management support, establish meaningful metrics for measuring performance in meeting development goals.
- Make recommendations to management on tool purchases and lead approved tool selection and acquisition efforts.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, with a minimum of 5 years professional experience in successful project management for hardware and software projects using both Waterfall and Agile development techniques.
- Experience in programs working across multiple geographies and/or internal departments.
- Proficient in using Microsoft Project or equivalent scheduling tool, Excel and collaboration tools.
- Knowledge of development best practices, such as CMMi, ISO 9001, and Six Sigma.
- Excellent organizational skills. Able to manage multiple projects independently.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Able to communicate and present project status and issues clearly and effectively.
- Project Management Institute PMP certification is desirable.
- Experience as development engineer in software development life cycle is desirable. Understands software development activities such as coding, compiling, testing and debugging.
- Occasional travel required to global engineering offices.
